  47.      On the label of the vial of tablets or capsules, the name of this
  48. drug is followed by a number that refers to the amount of codeine
  49. present (#1 has 7.5 mg codeine, #2 has 15 mg codeine, #3 has 30 mg codeine,
  50. and #4 has 60 mg codeine).

  52. STORAGE
  53.  
  54.      This medication should be stored at room temperature.  It should never be
  55. frozen.
  56.  
  57. USES
  58.  
  59.      Acetaminophen and codeine combination is used to relieve mild to severe
  60. pain (formulations of this medication with higher codeine contents are used to
  61. relieve more severe pain).  Codeine is a narcotic analgesic that acts upon on
  62. the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to relieve pain.
  63.  
  64. TREATMENT
  65.  
  66.      In order to avoid stomach upset, you can take this medication with food
  67. or milk.
  68.      This medication works most effectively if you take it at the onset of
  69. pain, rather than waiting until the pain becomes intense.
  70.      Measure the dose of the liquid form of this medication carefully with a
  71. specially designed 5-ml measuring spoon.  An ordinary kitchen teaspoon is not
  72. accurate enough for measuring the dosage.
  73.      If you are taking this medication on a regular schedule and you miss a
  74. dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for
  75. the next dose.  In that case, don't take the missed dose at all; just return
  76. to your regular dosing schedule.  Do not double the next dose.
  77.  
  78. SIDE EFFECTS
  79.  
  80.      Minor.
  81.  
  82.      Constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, false sense of
  83. well-being, flushing, light-headedness, loss of appetite, nausea, painful or
  84. difficult urination, or sweating.  These side effects should disappear as your
  85. body adjusts to the medication.
  86.      If you are constipated, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  87. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  88. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  89.      To reduce mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or hard
  90. candy.
  91.      If you feel dizzy or light-headed, sit or lie down for a while; get up
  92. slowly from a sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  93.  
  94.      Major.
  95.  
  96.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  97. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  98. anxiety, difficulty in breathing, excitation, fatigue, palpitations, rash,
  99. restlessness, sore throat and fever, tremors, unusual bleeding or bruising,
  100. weakness, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  102. INTERACTIONS
  103.  
  104.      This medication interacts with several other types of drugs:
  105.      1. Concurrent use with other central nervous system depressants (such as
  106. alcohol, antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepine tranquilizers, muscle
  107. relaxants, and phenothiazine tranquilizers) or with tricyclic antidepressants
  108. can cause extreme drowsiness.
  109.      2. A monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor taken within 14 days of this
  110. medication can lead to unpredictable and severe side effects.
  111.      3. Long-term use and high doses of the acetaminophen portion of this
  112. medication can increase the effects of oral anticoagulants (blood thinners,
  113. such as warfarin); this combination may lead to bleeding complications.
  114.      4. Anticonvulsants (antiseizure medications), barbiturates, and alcohol
  115. can increase the liver toxicity caused by large doses of the acetaminophen
  116. portion of this medication.
  117.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  118. taking, especially any listed above.
  119.  
  120. WARNINGS
  121.  
  122.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  123. any medications, especially to acetaminophen, codeine, or other narcotic
  124. analgesics (such as hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, methadone,
  125. morphine, oxycodone, and propoxyphene).
  126.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had an acute
  127. abdominal condition, asthma, a blood disorder, brain disease, colitis,
  128. epilepsy, gallstones or gallbladder disease, head injuries, heart disease,
  129. kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, mental illness, prostate disease,
  130. thyroid disease, or urethral strictures.
  131.      * If this drug makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  132. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  133. potentially dangerous equipment.
  134.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  135. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  136.      * Because this product contains codeine, it has the potential for abuse
  137. and must be used with caution.  Usually, it should not be taken on a regular
  138. schedule for longer than ten days at a time.  Tolerance develops quickly; do
  139. not increase the dosage or stop taking the drug abruptly unless you first
  140. consult your doctor.  If you have been taking large amounts of this medication
  141. for long periods, you may experience a withdrawal reaction (diarrhea,
  142. excessive yawning, gooseflesh, irritability, muscle aches, nausea, runny nose,
  143. shivering, sleep disorders, stomach cramps, sweating, trembling, vomiting, or
  144. weakness).  Your doctor may, therefore, want to reduce the dosage gradually.
  145.      * Because this product contains acetaminophen, additional drugs that
  146. contain acetaminophen should not be taken without your doctor's approval.  Be
  147. sure to check the labels on over-the-counter pain, sinus, allergy, asthma,
  148. diet, cough, and cold products before you use them in order to see if they
  149. contain acetaminophen.
  150.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  The effects of this
  151. medication during pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied in humans.
  152. Codeine used regularly in large doses during pregnancy can result in addiction
  153. of the fetus, leading to withdrawal symptoms (diarrhea, excessive crying,
  154. excessive yawning, irritability, fever, sneezing, tremors, or vomiting) at
  155. birth.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small
  156. amounts of this drug may pass into breast milk and cause drowsiness in the
  157. nursing infant.
